Traditions of the Basque Country

Basque traditions

The Basque Country has a very rich culture with a well-forged character.

Would you say beret, Basque cake and Basque pelota? You're almost there...
In addition to the Basque language "Euskara", the 64 inherits traditions that will conquer both adults and children.

Basque culture is present everywhere: in the language, the architecture, the songs and the dances, sports and gastronomy.

The Basque Country is full of treasures and you will have to cross the Spanish border to discover some of them.

The Basque Flag Dance (Ikurrin dantza or Agintariena): the dancers introduce themselves with this dance, which is why it is danced at the beginning of the show. The most characteristic is the waving of the Basque flag (Ikurrina) above the dancers' heads.

The Agurra, which is danced to pay tribute to personalities or during important events!

The fandango and the arin-arin, the Basque jumps (Jauziak or Mutxikoak) but also other dances are to be discovered.

TRADITIONS AND CULTURE OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY

Basque songs
Traditional songs in the Basque language often punctuate family gatherings but can also be heard in Basque choirs.

Basque music
The txistu is a straight flute with three holes that is used in Basque dances, accompanied by the Danbolin, a small drum that is hung from the left arm using a braided cord, as well as the accordion and many other original instruments.

Basque sports
Basque pelota with its “frontons” (walls) is THE sport of the Basque Country.
Basque strength is a special sport that was born from challenges launched by young Basques between the farms of the region, for centuries. This tradition has been transformed into a competition with multiple events: cutting a tree trunk with an axe, pulling a stone, lifting a stone, tug of war, etc. 16 disciplines are now officially recognized. You can attend friendly sporting events throughout the year and why not even test your strength and learn to play pelota.

Basque gastronomy

We find the famous Gâteau Basque, born in Cambo-les-bains. Made from a sweet and melting shortbread dough, and filled with local black cherry jam or pastry cream, a real treat. You will find an authentic bakery next to the campsite, "Le Domaine de Bassilour", where you can admire the period grain presses and taste their unique products.
Bayonne ham and chocolate are unmissable and emblematic of the city.

Come and enjoy your vacation in our accommodation in Bidart and savor Basque culture without moderation!
